Mission
Okwera Academy is a Canadian non-profit dedicated to dismantling systemic barriers and empowering Black communities by serving as a dedicated talent and career incubator. We address the significant educational and employment disparities faced by Black Canadians through essential resources, mentorship, skill development, and financial support.
The Challenge
Black Canadians, despite educational attainment comparable to the national average, experience far greater unemployment rates and lower earnings. In January 2021, the unemployment rate for Black Canadians (13.1%) was 70% higher than non-visible minorities (7.7%) (Source: Statistics Canada). Okwera Academy bridges this gap by providing a unique and targeted approach.
Our Approach
Okwera Academy operates with a national mandate delivered through a locally-specific lens, ensuring we address the diverse needs of Black sub-communities within Canada. We maintain regional connections and global awareness, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.
