Okwera Academy is a Canadian non-profit dedicated to dismantling systemic barriers and empowering Black communities by serving as a dedicated talent and career incubator. We address the significant educational and employment disparities faced by Black Canadians through essential resources, mentorship, skill development, and financial support.
The Challenge
Black Canadians, despite educational attainment comparable to the national average, experience far greater unemployment rates and lower earnings. In January 2021, the unemployment rate for Black Canadians (13.1%) was 70% higher than non-visible minorities (7.7%) (Source: Statistics Canada). Okwera Academy bridges this gap by providing a unique and targeted approach.

Okwera Academy operates with a national mandate delivered through a locally-specific lens, ensuring we address the diverse needs of Black sub-communities within Canada. We maintain regional connections and global awareness, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.

This program supports individuals seeking career exploration, offering guidance for those starting their careers or considering a change. Participants gain insights into different industries, build capacity, and discover their passions.
02. Validate
This program focuses on practical skill development and validation. Through real-world projects, internships, and mentorship, participants gain hands-on experience and refine their skills.
03. Elevate
This program caters to established professionals seeking career advancement. Elevate provides tailored resources, mentorship from industry leaders, and advanced skill development opportunities to propel participants to the next level.
